How Long Can Betta Fish Go Without Food?

One of the primary responsibilities for any pet owner is keeping their animal healthy and fed. Betta fish are among the most beloved aquarium fish species, but even though they're hardy there may come times when you must leave them behind temporarily. When traveling or going away for vacation or business it is good to be aware of how long your fish can survive without food and how to prepare accordingly.

How Long Can Bettas Go Without Food? In general, betta fish become stressed and weak due to lack of nutrition after five days without being fed, increasing their susceptibility to infection. To ensure their wellbeing, find someone to come feed your betta regularly when you leave home or a caretaker can come feed before leaving them behind.

Your Betta may require extra food due to health problems or illness; their appetite will likely decrease and they may need feedings more often.

Feed your betta the right way with live foods before slowly transitioning them to pellets or flakes. Daphnia, bloodworms and brine shrimp tend to be favorite choices among bettas; once they have become familiar with them you can introduce other options such as pellets and flakes. If they seem hesitant towards new foods give it time and try giving more slowly before trying again - or take another approach entirely until their body adjusts!
